SAWs® Virginia is an all-volunteer 501(c)3 nonprofit affiliate of SAWs® Inc. SAWs Inc. is a national, mission founded in 2003 to build wheelchair ramps for persons with long-term ambulatory disabilities who cannot afford one on their own. Our goal is to restore independence and dignity to the impoverished disabled allowing them to age-in-place and to reconnect with their community. Our mission is to transform their lives and the lives of those who serve them.
Love the work you’ve done for me and my wife.
I don’t know who’s the happiest me or her.
The need for ramps is great and continues to grow as Baby Boomers age and medical advances prolong life. According to the 2019 American Community Survey, 3.6 million people in America 15 and older use a wheelchair. More than 500,000 of them live in Virginia. Employment is also a key factor in the social integration and economic self-sufficiency of working-age people with disabilities. But due to the high unemployment rate among the disabled, there are thousands of people who are disconnected from the community for lack of a wheelchair ramp or the resources to acquire one. A SAWs ramp is a transformative gift.
This ministry has already changed the lives of thousands of people with disabilities, their families and their caregivers. But it has also touched thousands more volunteers who share in the life changing experience of restoring their freedom.
This is fantastic! It changes everything.
The design is simple and allows people from teens to seniors to participate. If you can hold a drill, you can do this work! Ramps are preassembled indoors in a few hours and can be installed in a single day. Volunteers see the impact of their effort in changing the lives of those in desperate need at the end of each ramp. It is a powerful weekend outreach for church youth, men’s and women’s groups, social clubs, to be the hands and feet of Christ. It is also a great team building opportunity for your employer or your business.
My experience with SAWs was a great blessing for me right from the beginning to the end.
But there are many other ways to volunteer besides building ramps. Contact us to learn more.
“Again Jesus said, ‘Simon son of John, do you love me?’ He answered, ‘Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.’ Jesus said, ‘Take care of my sheep.’”
That’s our mission.
